Apps, Tech & Modern Stuff *IN BETA*

As a nod to TechCrunch’s Disrupt series, I got to thinking about tech companies that changed my life but then slunk away (and, yes, I know there’s already a backlash against the word). TiVo, Vonage, Movable Type and others all … Continue reading

Everyone who reads my latest set of stories for TheStreet, will likely be someone who still uses a computer  everyday. Or at least every few days. Or maybe once a week? PCs may not (arguably) be the go-to device to check … Continue reading

Nannies, chauffeur service and tablets from an airline? Bring it!

I often fly with my daughter so most of the time, I’m stuck in the middle seat so the kid can enjoy the scenery. Snacks and digital entertainment options? Meh. I’m already well prepared to travel with a toddler.

But I could really use Wi-Fi. And a power outlet. And a nanny! Or a chauffeur ride home! Can you believe these perks exist on some airlines?

I didn’t know about them myself until I spoke to startup RouteHappy.com, which tracks all the perks of flying (including the usual legroom and on-timeliness). RouteHappy founders Robert Albert and Adam Gwosdof shared their own experiences with me, plus the site culled through thousands of member reviews for some interesting perks.

Read on about the perks:

How to improve cell reception inside your own house

Covering consumer technology for TheStreet.com often means plucking story ideas (and concerns) from my own life. My latest set of stories are very much related to the terrible cellular service I get in my basement, where I work.

I have T-Mobile and have been with the company for maybe 10 years (!!). In an attempt to improve my own indoor reception, I decided to look into new ways  to do this.  Devices like 4G signal boosters and femtocells are hitting the market. And there are several apps that can improve service a bar or two.

A Peek at Wi-Fi’s Future: Simpler and Faster (7 Gbps!)

While exploring an update on Wi-Fi (and routers and in-flight service), it seemed like a good time as any to update myself and readers what’s next in Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi Alliance happily obliged with an in-depth interview.

Edgar Figueroa, CEO of the Wi-Fi Alliance, told me about the upcoming new generation of Wi-Fi called 802.11ac (it’s so new and unfinalized that it doesn’t even have a name!). Products are already coming out boasting connection speeds of 1 gigabit per second. He went even further into the future by mentioning 802.11ad, which offers speeds of up to 7 gigabits per second.

Smart tips for flying with Wi-Fi

My first in-flight Wi-Fi experience was memorable. Awful, really. Soooooo slow.  But with JetBlue and Boeing recently committing to spreading Wi-Fi to more aircraft, in-flight Wi-Fi can only get faster.

In the meantime, I’ve checked in with in-flight Wi-Fi providers GoGo and Row44.com plus nifty newcomer RouteHappy.com (tells you which flights have Wi-Fi & power outlets!) to get some insight on making the wireless experience tolerable. Read up on tips and suggestions and let me know if you have more.
